The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work.

When you're the man who owns Asia's most successful low cost air airline and a network of successful budget hotels scattered across ASEAN, what would be your business venture? Well, for a certain Tony Fernandez, the next most logical step was to launch his very own no-frills mobile prepaid network, and just two days ago, that was exactly what he did.

Story continues after the jump.

Taking cue from his ever growing roster of no-frills-centric businesses, Tony Fernandez unveiled his latest venture into the fast paced world of mobile networks – Tune Talk - in unsurpassed style. Held at the SAE Hangar in Sepang, the location wasn't the only unique thing about this launch, as sitting smack in the middle of the space was one of Air Asia's latest acquirement – a brand new Airbus.

Headed by former rocker Jason Lo (CEO, Tune Talk), Tune Talk was created with the frequent traveler in mind. Currently operating as a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), Tune Talk piggybacks off Celcom's mobile network and will offer the same network coverage.

Utilizing the 010 prefix, one of Tune Talk's main selling points is that customers get to choose their own phone number at the Tune Talk website once they purchase the SIM card starter pack. Users will also be able to change their existing phone numbers via the same website.

At RM5 a pop, the starter packs consist of a SIM card and talk time of the same value. However, in terms of call charges, Tune Talk has abolished all the confusing pricing schemes and has gone with a simple flat rate of 22 sen per minute and 5 sen per SMS to all local mobile operators and land lines. During the opening address, Jason Lo also stated that international calls would cost at least 10% less than what's currently being charged on the market now. Apart from the calls, all Tune Talk users will also be covered with a RM100,000 insurance premium from Etiqa Insurance.

As Tune Talk grows it's subscriber base here in Malaysia, the company hopes to one day become an ASEAN MVNO and provide its users with network coverage through out the region at local rates. If negotiations come through successfully, it looks like frequent travelers around the ASEAN region will look forward to enjoying not only better coverage, but also massive savings in terms of roaming costs.
